Dec 24 - Gravel Pit/Beacon Hill (Antelope Island)
Sunny w/ a few early clouds with highs in the low 30s. Heading up to Antelope Island this morning. The plan is Gravel Pit/Beacon Hill; bison permitted.
It's in the upper 20s when I arrive on the causeway.
It's frosty this morning with a few hawks flying around. But no critters except gull and a few ducks.
I arrive on the Island and there are no bison in sight. In fact, I don't see any critters except a lone bison after the pit toilets.
Oh, there was what looked like a Kestrel that some folks were taking a photo of at the rocks near the Frary Peak turn-off. Quiet morning.
No bison near Sentry Peak, I so want to hike that. Soon I will; just giving my hip some more time.
I turn at the Ranch and start north.
Across from that lone bison but far to the west, I see a few blacks dots on the mountain that I'll bet are bison!
Then rolling up on the Frary Peak round, there's about 20 pronghorn heading north!!! Yea!!
I arrive at the Gravel Pit trail. There's one car already parked. It's still in the 20s; I gear up and head up the trail. The trail is clear but there is some frozen snow on the ground.
I climb out of the pit expecting to see bison but there's no bison in sight! They've all moved on!
Quiet trail only passing a couple and their 2 dogs heading back to the trailhead.
Soon I'm on top of Beacon Hill. A bit chilly up here due to the wind but it's beautiful! Wish I could stay but the rocks and picnic tables are frosty - nothing worse than a cold/wet butt.
Time to head down.Soon I'm at my car and driving down the causeway.
Surprise, there's an adult Bald Eagle on the north/Salt Lake side. He's not far from the road and he's eating something!!! There's also what looks like a coyote in the distance behind him. I pull-off.
The eagle is definitely eating something.
When I go to focus on the coyote, I find out it's another eagle (juvenile) with a bird kill as well. Awesome!Soon the juvenile takes flies leaving a pile of feather and left-overs behind. What a way to close out my day!
