June 16 - Lambs Canyon Drive

Sunny cool morning AND it's the first time I can go somewhere in just under 6 weeks as I broke my foot (actually anterior calcaneus - heel) on June 6. I was supposed to be in Capitol Reef Friday/Saturday but decided to come home earlier to clean up my yard after my new garage/driveway. Bad move because I missed the one small step coming out of my garage door. Intense pain - I thought I broke my foot and would be yelling for help from by backyard but after the pain wave passed, I was able to finish spraying my dandelions, get my crutches, ice and Ace bandage before settling in to ice my very swollen right foot.

I hobble on that thing for ten days before heading to the ER. It was a communiated (broken in multiple places) mildly displaced fracture but fortunately for me, it was not in the joint space so no surgery required.

I was freed from the walking boot on June 14. I have no steep hills in the 6 week future but I can escape my house and drive/look around!!

Heading up to Lambs Canyon to see what might be flying, it is June 16 (but it's also been mostly in the 70s in the valley which is chilly for this time of year).

It's mid-50s when I start up just before noon.

The Bisquitroot is done blooming. Seeing some Penstemon

 and Larkspur.

Also saw a Swallowtail, Whites, Rocky Mt Duskywings on my drive up.

The stream along side the road is flowing fast - faster than the last time I was here over a month ago (when the road was still closed).

The trail is closed for "Hazardous Work" - not sure what that means but perhaps they are burning those slash piles from last Fall. I don't see or smell smoke though.

I check the area around the parking lot and Wow! Absolutely no butterflies! Amazing. Things my be late or the early stuff just didn't fly.

It was a quick stop as I start down the road.

I see a Mourning Cloak, White, and more Duskywings on the way down until I stop at a pullout where residents store their snowmobiles in the winter.

I quickly find a couple of Rocky Mt Duskywings - one in the parking area and one sunbathing on a rock.

I walk down the road and all I see are more Duskywings. Wow, no Blues, Orangetips - perhaps it's too cool?

But the Cherry trees are still in bloom as are these shrubs.

As I start back to my car, I see an Orange flyer. I get a quick look - it's a Crescent (not a good look to differentiate between Field or Northern though - I just couldn't find it in my camera - shoot).

When I get back to my car, I scare up a Blue. He keeps flying but finally settles down - it's a Spring Azure!!

Nice to be back out again!
